Vegas, BABY! David and Claudia Lefeve 11/21/09

DSC01511 Dave and I go back a ways: to the snow days where we would take off hitting cars with snow balls, to the sounds of the REFLEX from Duran Duran, Wrestlemania I, Intellivision, Sega Genesis, Frogger, and Pac Man. While Michael was showing everyone the Moonwalk on that new TV show, MTV, we were sneaking beers in the basement of Davey’s house while delivering every punchline to Airplane!!, our favorite movie on Betamax, and taking turns slugging Dave’s kid brother, Donny, who loved the attention.

Fast forward to 2009, Donny is now Don, 6′ 1″ and Dave’s baby sister, Anne, who had just been born, has recently graduated college. We all met again for the first time in 20 years in Las Vegas for Dave and Claudia’s wedding, and it was a blast! Take a step back to January, 25th, 2009, date of my wedding, in Alexandria, VA, to Yaremys. Dave and Claudia were in attendance and were the first couple that Yaremys, my newly arrived girlfriend from Cuba, had met. She had been in the States a few days when I proposed, ( listen here – our engagement)
on NPR radio and we shared our first moments together with Dave and Claudia, and their loveable dogs: Gus the Pug and the now deceased, Tucker the Boxer- replaced by the maniacal Pug, Guapo, aka, Diablo.

Dave and Claudia heard me playing at my wedding, and Claudia had asked if I would perform for them in Vegas. They wanted traditional music, but which pieces would be right for them? After a lengthy discussion over some adult beverages, we decided on Vivaldi’s Lute Concerto, Pachebel’s Canon, and J.S. Bach Prelude for the Entrance and Recessionals. The rest would be up to me.

The Groomsmen, and Ladies in Waiting entered the quaint chapel while the crowd barely contained themselves for the imminent festivities. There were close to 100 guests, mostly from the East Coast, including the Priest, who had flown in to celebrate the wedding. The Priest remarked, “no one from my parish is letting me live down that I am in doing a wedding in Vegas, Thank You David and Claudia!”

The Ceremony was short and meaningful, as it concluded, the guests were ushered out to strains of Vivaldi on my guitar. The Reception took place in an enormous hall in the Bellagio Hotel, where the guests were entertained by a Big Band led by Chandler Judkins ( www.liveeventsmusic.com) and backed up by Bassist Justin Vogel. The happy couple and guests danced away the night to Swing music and Rockabilly guitar and managed to save up some energy for a few photos with Elvis, dancing at a night club, hours at the card tables, and an unforgettable disco bus ride that could only happen in Vegas!ChristopherKilday

Wong-Kaplan Wedding at Timber Cove Inn, Jenner, CA 10-04-09

IMG_2269

This gorgeous Pacific Coast view, atop a sheer mountain cliff, was the backdrop to the wedding  for Becky Wong and Aaron Kaplan’s wedding ceremony that combined the mixed  traditions that they honored. Rabbi Gershon, and Sacred Event Planner Yehudit Steinberg (www.asacredevent.com) crafted a ceremony filled with laughter and tradition that brought both families, Chinese and Jewish together to celebrate Becky and Aaron’s special day. Aaron was an aficionado of the Classical Guitar and made one special request for Becky’s Entrance, a piece entitled Tango, by Isaac Albeniz. It was a fantastic choice, that gave me pleasure to learn especially for their wedding. The last 5 photos in this set were taken by Yaremys Rodriguez, the rest, were taken by Lukas and Sky Snyder,

(http:// www.lukesnyderstudio.com)

A special thanks to them for contributing the outstanding shots to this blog.

The near gale force winds were challenging for myself and the Rabbi, but they relented and the ceremony concluded under the sunny California sky. Abalone divers and otters swam below the cliffs as the guests retreated to the charming Inn (www.timbercoveinn.com) Florist Rhonda Harrison, from Gardens by the Sea ( flowersingualala.com) provided captivating floral arrangements and Photographer Luke Snyder  (http://www.lukesnyderstudio.com)  took dazzling photos as the sunset and wind provided him with his creative palette.  Florist Thanks to DJ Goyo, from Uptempo Productions  (http://www.uptempoproductions.com) who provided rare beats that kept everyone dancing the night away!

“Music was awesome! Hey Chris and Greg,
You guys did an awesome job at Becky and Aaron’s wedding.
You both helped make their day joyfully memorable.
It was a pleasure to work with you both.
The party danced till midnight, two hours after Greg left! I couldn’t believe it.
That is the sign of a successful celebration. I look forward to working with you both again soon.
Best regards,
Yehudit”

Ana Raquel at the Fairmont Sonoma Golf Club 10/10/09

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Ana and discussed her Latin roots, Mexican, and how she wanted that influence to be in her wedding ceremony. She did not want Mariachi, but some real Spanish flair.  She  had chosen the majestic Fairmont Sonoma  Mission Inn and Spa  for her site, and it would turn out to be a crisp, windy day. Coincidentally,  we had decided upon ‘Arada’ meaning, ‘windlike’,  from Spain’s Federico Torroba (March 3, 1891 – September 12, 1982) Suite Castellana to be the Entrance for her bridal party. The Beatles ‘ Here Comes the Sun’ was performed for her Entrance, while the wind whipped throughout the transfixed guests. Ana appeared in a heavenly white dress, and the ceremony concluded with the Gypsy Kings ‘ Bomboleo’, which got the party started with a true Latin feel.

I played Bossa Nova’s from my extensive repertory while delicate Hors d’oevres from the Fairmont’s kitchen were served to the guests. As the royal sun touched the distant skyline, the chilly breeze became a bit too much. As dinner seating began, the outdoor reception had a perfectly timed ending, as guests were ushered into the Fairmont’s globe shaped chandeliers.

Russell and Lesley Wong’s Homestyle Wedding 10/03/09

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Russell and I spoke at length about the intimate wedding he was hosting at his family home in Atherton, CA.  Russell had a special request, in addition to the songs we selected for the Entrance and Recessional. Lesley had an Uncle, that played harmonica, and wanted me to accompany him during the Remembrance Ceremony.

There would be a short ceremony, during which a lighting of candles would honor the family members that had passed on. We had a short rehearsal before the wedding began, and I assured the nervous uncle that he would sound fine. He did!

After the ceremony, he and I played a few Bossa Nova tunes together. I was inspired to record with a chromatic harmonica on my next recording.

DSC00529

This was the best wedding reception of the year, and also the smallest.

A tiny, Noe Valley home, with a abundant garden, in full bloom was the backdrop to this wedding celebrating the marriage of Rett and Caroline. They shared a home that had a magnificent view of the Bay and was filled with warm friends, and family , that had come as far away as Provence, France. There was a neighborhood cat, that came to watch the party, and took interest in my concert on the small brick patio, under a tree. I asked Rett about his cat, and was surprised when he told me that it was a neighborhood cat, that had enjoyed their home so much, and their 4 boys, that upon suggestion from his youngest, he built the cat his own house in the front yard garden.

Mom’s rattatouille was OUT OF THIS WORLD, and paired with the French wine and champagne, the night was a memorable one. Great conversation, warm atmosphere, gracious hosts and night lights that added a charming touch.

Michael and Kerrie’s Hymeneal Nocturne 9-19-09

DSC00455

Michael Brynteson contacted me in August, and we talked about his vision for his wedding ceremony to Kerrie. They desired some light percussion for Kerri’s Entrance, an atypical Classical piece for the wedding party Entrance, and  Bob Marley’s ” One Love”, which I would sing.   It is always a delight to work with a couple that has a strong vision of how they want their ceremony to unfold, and Michael’s background in video and Kerri’s  in costume and makeup made it easy to achieve their momentous  plan.  At first, I suggested Afro Cuban Bata rhythms, but we decided the North Indian Tabla would be better suited, and more melodic. For the Bridal Party Entrance, I chose J.S. Bach’s Prelude to Cello Suite 1007, a lovely Baroque masterpiece seldom performed on Guitar. There was an additional request, two weeks before the ceremony, for Madyson, Kerri’s 16 year old niece to sing Bob Dylan’s ” Make You Feel My Love”. Would it be possible to accompany her? Of course!

The wedding was held in Sebastopol, CA at the enchanting Redwood Hill Gardens (www.redwoodhillgardens.com)  Rosie London, and her entire family worked tirelessly, and joyfully,  ensuring the party flowed smoothly through the two venues of the day; The Gardens, and the Poolside Deck.  The Gardens were set below the main house, a modern wooden home surrounded by an enormous  wooden deck, heat lamps, and perched upon a small hill, 100 yards above the Gardens. There was a lily covered pond and a quaint mini cabin behind the Gardens that served as a romantic photogenic backdrop. The Gardens themselves were decorated with a breathtaking floral arrangement, a homemade altar made from bundled willow branches, and large white candles were perched upon pedestals, marking the Entrance through the Gardens. There was adequate space for 50 guests, and a serpentine pathway trailed through the stoic Redwoods planted throughout the backyard by the jovial Mr. London some 30 years ago. The Poolside deck was split into two levels, was  covered in light grey and tan slate, and surrounded  the sizable, alluring  pool that  took everyone’s breath away. The lower level  had adequate space for 5 bar tables, a DJ set up, and the upper deck had a substantial bar and overlook.

I arrived after a leisurely drive through the Sonoma  countryside  and found the London’s son in law shuttling people up and down the hillside in their golf cart. The set up and break down of our PA and equipment was greatly facilitated by the golf cart, and the skillful maneuvering of it’s driver through the parking lot, and the front yard.

I began playing light Classical music for the arriving guests, and when Kerri began her Procession, I started  to play Tintaal, a traditional 16 beat rhythm on the Tablas while Ahmed accompanied me, lightly strumming Flamenco siguiriyas. We set up a mic for Madyson to sing before the vows were exchanged. Madyson and I  had met while I was setting up. We had a short rehearsal 30 minutes prior to the ceremony, I knew there would be no difficulties.  Madyson had a strong, clear voice, and good intonation. She had prepared well for her performance, and the song had been performed at her Uncle’s wedding 20 years earlier. It was a family tradition that she was now continuing for her Aunt. She performed a captivating version of  “Make You Feel My Love”. Michael and Kerri’s vows were exchanged, and Ahmed and I began playing “One Love”. The newlywed couple walked through the Garden, and the festivities began. We quickly broke down our amplifiers, packed up the instruments, and jumped into the golfcart, and were shuttled up to the Poolside Deck.

We began playing Rio Ancho, a Flamenco favorite, and the energy level was very high. We were excited to be surrounded by a great crowd, that was ready to party. We followed that piece with Loca Juventud, a personal favorite from the Buena Vista Social Club soundtrack. Yaremys and I sang the song together, commemorating  our own loca amor in Havana. As the meal was being served, Michael asked if we could serenade the party through dinner. It was my pleasure to perform for his party as the sun set and the purple dusk of twilight brought the veil down upon the sky. As Ahmed and I continued playing, the candles lit the tables and mirrored the starry sky above. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to be that night.ChristopherKilday

Brant & Jennifer’s Intergalactic Nuptial

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

_MG_4021I received a call from dear friend, and wedding organizer, Wendy Wittmann, to perform at the Berkley City Club, for Jennifer and Brant.

I met with the couple in August and we discussed the type of music that would be best for their ceremony. Brant was an independent film director, and wanted traditional music for the Entrance, Air on the G String, and the Bridal March, but for the Recessional, he had a special request that I arrange the Star Wars theme, by John Williams for Classical Guitar.

Of course I had no trouble making that arrangement, and as the wedding commenced, the crowd heard the theme ringing out through the reception area, and everyone smiled and enjoyed the arrangement. That piece was very, well, Brant and Jennifer!

Thanks to Alison Bank, a fantastic, talented photographer that snapped these wonderful shots. Please check her out at www.firstcomesloveweddings.com

Memorial Day Weekend at South Lake Tahoe’s Deerfield Lodge with Brandy and Joel

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

I received an email describing the ideal ceremonial music from Brandy, and she had requested Annie’s Song from John Denver as her and Joel’s Entrance piece.  I remember as a child, Bob had come to a nearby neighborhood,in Alexandria,  and was interested in purchasing a home. He didn’t end up buying the home, but he did have everyone talking about the possibility. I had become aware of his music at that point, and remember how I loved his voice.  I began listening to Annie’s Song, and knew it would sound great outside, echoing throughout the forest. I told Brandy that I would have no trouble singing it and All You Need is Love, by the Beatles.

” You fill up my senses
like a night in the forest
like the mountains in springtime,
like a walk in the rain
like a storm in the desert,
like a sleepy blue ocean
you fill up my senses,
come fill me again.

Come let me love you,
let me give my life to you
let me drown in your laughter,
let me die in your arms
let me lay down beside you,
let me always be with you
come let me love you,
come love me again.”

John Denver

As we drove through the mountains, the scenery invoked images from Ansel Andams. We were filled with wonder. There was a recent Bay Bridge retrofit, and due to that the Bay Bridge was closed for the long holiday weekend. Traffic would be impossible, and we left extra early, to arrive in time, and to avoid any delays. We left San Francisco at 8am and arrived by noon, giving us plenty of time to set up our PA system and do a sound check. The mountain passes, clear blue sky and towering Redwoods made the drive a pleasure as we wound through the hairpin turns free of the stress of city life. A few months ago, Yaremys and were invited to stay in a ski villa at North Star in Lake Tahoe by my old friend Pat Orlando, who had flown in from Peru. We luxuriated in a villa that had 7 bedrooms, a firepit outdoors, a hot tube that held 6 and a million view of the Sierras. We stayed and skied the last weekend of the season in April, and were marveling at the fast fading snow and the terrain it was exposing. We had hoped to return for the summer and we delighted to make the trip this Labor Day weekend.

We arrived at the Deerfield Lodge, http://www.tahoedeerfieldlodge.com/index.html, and were greeted by gracious host and owner, Robin Eichenfield, who showed me the lovely altar site nestled in the Redwood grove on  site. The landscaping, hospitality, atmosphere, and gracious host helped ensure everything moved smoothly, leaving nothing to want. Joel and Brandy’s giant German shepard, Max, roamed freely on the grounds, The Deerfield was a dog friendly lodge!

The courtyard of the Deerfield served as the ceremonial grounds. There were tables set out in the grass, a stone walkway wound around the Redwoods towering overhead, and soft lights glowed at  dusk as the festivities began. Comfortable lawn chairs, heat lamps, and pillows were arranged perfectly, giving the guests plenty of room to relax.

Brandy’s mother wept as I sang Annie’s Song, and it was quite romantic to watch the betrothed couple walk towards each other from distant parts of the path, circling behind the stone altar, whilst surrounded by their family and friends.

After the ceremony, we were surprised to know that there was a fireworks celebration. A spectacular event, indeed!

All You Need Is Love!

All You Need Is Love!

All You Need Is Love!

June 13th, 2009 Rancho Nicasio, CA

A hot, sunny afternoon, on the Rancho Nicasio estate, nestled in the Foothills of Petaluma, was the pristine setting for Sara and George Cook’s wedding. I found myself driving through the foothills near one of my favorite tourist destinations, Tomales Bay. Each time I visit, I indulge myself in a bag of fresh oysters from Tomales Bay Oyster Company. This time, I was unable to stop by before the ceremony, but I was able to enjoy a few during performance, and thanks to Cindi de Channes, the brilliant photographer who lent me a hand with that! http://www.cindidechannes.com

I was struck by the location – a Hollow that consisted of: one church, a large bar ( www.ranchonicasio.com), a baseball diamond, and a real estate office. That was it! The funniest part, was the 2 hour parking signs beside the baseball field, that occupied the central part of the hollow. Was there a meter maid in Rancho Nicasio, or would they send out a DPT patrol from San Francisco once a day to chalk the tires here?

The Ranch was enormous, and said to be owned by the manager of Huey Lewis. It was said to be a destination ( albeit off the beaten path) for many bands coming up from San Francisco. Good music was rumored to abound here, and one day I might return for that. If I do, I would hire Ted Rodden, the sound man at Rancho Nicasio that helped facilitate my outdoor set, near the gazebo, and in the Redwood Grove, where the ceremony took place. 100% professional, laid back, and friendly. My kind of guy. Thanks, again Ted, you helped me sound great, and made my performance stress free!

As I loaded my equipment in, I noticed something unusual as the caterers set up their spread; a 20 foot Redwood table that displayed the food. It was about 5 feet wide, and was the most spectacular picnic table I have ever seen. Robust orange, sienna, and red hues under a thick lacquer coat shone in the setting sun.

George and Sara had both an elegant entrance, of 100 yards, so I had plenty of time to perform! We had talked about the music that they really loved, and even though it wasn’t traditional music for weddings, it would be perfect for them.
George and Sara were really big fans of the Beatles, and I am too. We talked about the ” Here Comes the Bride” song, and how that wasn’t really their style, so we decided on ‘Here Comes The Sun’, for Sara’s Entrance, and ‘All You Need Is Love’, as a sing along, would be perfect for their Recessional. It was!

From the Prelude played skillfully on organ by a close family member, to the sing a long, and  the secret ninja roll demonstrated  by George’s favorite nephew, everyone joined together and made it a magical moment.

I played jazz outdoors as the purple  sun set into the Pacific ocean, over the Petaluma Foothills, and past Tomales Bay.
